Yesterday Kelsey breezed Catch for me. Apparently he did very well-a new track record! Yay! Anyway today was his day of rest and so I decided to give him a long soap bath out in the back cross-ties. I didn't want to risk turning him out, just because he is so high-strung and always ends up galloping around and stirring up the horses around him. I walked down the emalculate barn and found his stall. HIs chestnut coat gleamed in the tiny patch of sun that he was lying in. Its funny because he loves to lie down. Maybe its just his little thing, but every time a walk past his stall he's there on the ground. Oh well, as long as he's ot sick (he;s not I checked!) then I guess its all good! I clucked gently as I looked in on him, and grabbed him blue nylon halter and lead. He saw me and quickly rose to his feet, and then shook...just like a dog! His oversized ears flopped on his head and he walked towards he walked towards me, obviously looking for food.I sighed-if he was good after his bath (which was must unlikely) then he would get lots of his favorite watermelon horse treast. ( I know weird-right? But he loves them!) I reached up to slip his halter on...he carefully eluded me. Great! This was going to be one of his mischevious days, I thought. I slipped the lead rope around the top of his neck to offer some stability, and finally I got the halter on. He seemed pleased with himself. Ugghhh! He was going to be pushing the limits today!
While I realized that taking him alone in the back cross-ties was probably not such a good idea, I had too because there was way too much activity in the barn and he was already trying to act up. *SIgh* I reached the back "ties" and led him in...much to his disaprovall...of course! I clipped each lead to him and starred and the work before me. He was filty! Sweat marks stained his coat-from where he simply just paced in his stall, and his choppy mane was a mess, as was his tail. I reached for my brushes...Great! I left them in the tack room! I couldn't very well leave Catch right here-what if some young rider came up and tried to pet him, or walked up behind him? And there was no way I was going to take him back up to the barn. The sea breeze tinged my lips as I looked around in hopes for and idea. Thats when I saw my lesson instructer-hunterjumper. "Hey over here!" I called. She looked up and walked over to me. "Hey-give'in him a bath?"
"Yeah" I said. Thats when I popped the question..."Is there anyway you could stay with him while I go get my stuff? because..."
"Sure just go! But hurry I was just about to leave...we're going to look at a horse."
I said my thanks and rushed off towards the barn. I got to the tack room, and found my trunk. It was locked(I don't know why I even bother) and I quickely undid the combonation. I got my shampoo/coat conditioners, and brushes and made my way back.
When I got back , Kelsey pointed out a small cut on his right foreleg. I thanked her and wished her good luck with the new horse, and she rushed off. She was so nice, I was lucky to have her as a trainer.
I bent down to examine the cut...nothing major...luckily! It was probably just a scratch from when he stoof up this morning. SO I got to work. I picked his hooves first-something I hated to do with him. I squeezed and leaned against him and he finally lifted his hooves. One by one that is! I cleaned them all then curried him over. He liked that a lot. Hair came rolling off him. Then I got tp brushing him down...something he didn't like as much, he kept tryingto play with the brush. When I was finished he looked like a penny. It was time to tackle that mane and tail. I slowly picked my way through tem untill they too, were silky. NOw it was time for his bath. Normally I didn't groom before a bath...but desperate times called for desperat measures! I hosed him off and sudsed him up with shampoo. I hosed him once again and conditioned his mane and tail. All this took quite a while and when I was done he really did look like a penny! I dried him off a little and applied a litle ointment to his cut. Then I led him back to his stall...he wanted to graze several times, but it was only allowed once. When I put him in his stall the first thing he did was roll. It just figures doesn't it!
